Chrome Family Safety Extension

Hi there!

Please help us improve our Chrome addon. What do you like? What don’t you like? What can we change or add to the browser? I personally read every piece of feedback that comes in and I try my best to reply to every one of them also.

Hey, did you know that we now have a free iPad browser? You can download it here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/free-browser-for-families./id675451608?mt=8

Thanks,
Paul

  1. White list for Croptonite

I don't know, why have you blocked feedback input on Cryptonite.

    Here is a failure scenario:

    1) Your extension is showing false negative on a site I want to use (exmo.me in my case). Maybe it is correct behavior, but I believe it is false
    2) I want to use this site anyways
    3) Popup "take me there" doesn't remember my choice. I see it every time is make actions there.
    4) No whitelist
    5) Can't use website
    6) Disable / uninstall Cryptonite

    Should be

User can select "see website once" or "make an exception forever (add to white list)

    Hi Vlad,

Why would you want to use exmo.me if exmo.com is the right site.

I think people need to be reminded every time they visit a phishing site. If you think a domain isn’t phishing and you think it’s a false positive, you can click “Is this an error” and tell us so we can evaluate it.

As for your product feedback, unfortunately it’s free so there’s only so much we can do. One option would be to charge for it and put more time and resource in – this is something we are considering.

  2. The category ON/OFF switches unclear to me

The category selections have a switch ON/OFF - it not immediatley obvious if this means the BLOCK is on/OFF or the category content is ON/OFF?? Maybe change wording to BLOCK/ALLOW woukld be less ambiguous

This is a great idea Harry but given that we haven’t updated this product in a while, it’s not likely that we will add this feature. I’m very sorry but it will continue to do one thing – block links you’d rather not see.

  4. Ads not blocked - see lots of almost nudity if you look at certain news articles then see a lot of mini image ads pointing to "stories"

The pictures advertising "news" stories when you look at a story are often times totally inappropriate for kids and adults that don't feel like looking at "babes in bikinis" or other things like that. How can I turn off these suggested stories that come in when you view a story. For example, viewing the story on Harrison Ford's plane crash, at the bottom are all kinds of ****** hollywood images to other stories. Don't want that.

I’m afraid we can’t classify every image and video that could be considered “inappropriate”. I do agree with your opinions regarding how inappropriate these images are for kids. But we classify pornography.

Try changing the setting on your browser to Extra Strong and see if that helps – but it won’t remove ads – you could try installing AdBlock too.

    Thanks,
    Paul

  6. Blocking More Specific Sites

It'd be useful if pages such as individual Twitter accounts or Tumblr pages, with distinct URLs could be submitted for filtering. There is so much **** on those two sites that is not caught by your filter.

Hi there, we did give this a lot of thought but it would require a huge amount of work to verify each URL. We will dedicate more time to these sites in the very near future because I agree, there is a huge amount of adult content on them.

    Warm regards,

  7. Chrome Incoginito Mode

Hi, When my childrens using Chrome goes to Incognito mode to see some *** videos and **** then look your message "Yay" "META CERT"and the "icon" But they recognize the icon and the name, ahaaa.

this is not very difficult, go to Extension / Meta Cert and uncheck " Permit in incognito mode" and after that.. ***, ****, chat, file sharing, ,********, *** in the kitchen...etc.

I do not think that this application ensures nothing, at least in Chrome.
hiding the icon and redirecting to another page that is not Meta Cert could be an idea. (the logo there gives…

    Hi, It’s Paul from MetaCert,

I apologize for taking so long to reply to this conversation. It got lost for some reason – sorry.

You are right about the block page and the logo. You can hide our shield by using right-click and then select “hide button”.

As @Joseph says, Google has finally realized the importance of user accounts so parental controls can be better managed.

As soon as Google updates Chrome it will be possible to protect your extension password.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and again, I’m sorry for taking so long to reply.
